How This Copy Came to the Library

This is a 2011 paperback edition of Birthday Pi by Douglas M. Keenan. The book begins with the question, “How many seconds between your birthdays?” and uses it to explore ideas in measurement, mathematics, and music.Memories & Connections
The first in a short series of three books by one of my relatives, Doug Keenan. He recently passed away, so I decided to pick up his books while they are still available. Purchased in August 2026.
Doug lived an interesting life. He was an electrical engineer, held the patent for the multiband universal remote control, and was a true tinkerer. For example, he was very big into 3D printing. In fact, my Dad used to host makers at his shop in Indy, and Doug’s demonstration of the 3D printers he had built was the first I had seen.
The family lore was that Doug was a mathematical savant of sorts, and he was always fascinated with numbers and, in particular, the pyramids in Egypt. These short books are proof of that passion.
Regretfully, I never got to talk to Doug as an adult. I know we would have had some incredible conversations. From the stories I’ve heard about him, he was definitely someone who questioned the norms of society, and I think he was pretty keenly aware of how a lot of things really worked in truth.
