This is the Folio Society’s second printing of The Fables of Æsop, issued in 1999. Although the title page is dated 1998, the production statement explicitly identifies this copy as the second printing of 1999.
The edition reproduces the illustrations Edward J. Detmold created for Hodder and Stoughton’s 1909 edition. It was typeset in Monotype Modern Extended and printed on Caxton Wove paper at St Edmundsbury Press. The color illustrations were printed by Amadeus Press, and the volume was bound in full cloth by Hunter & Foulis. Detmold’s original binding design was redrawn by David Eccles.
The tan cloth cover is one of the copy’s most distinctive features: a large red eagle fills the central panel, framed by dark-blue botanical borders and lettering.
This Folio Society volume preserves Edward J. Detmold’s 1909 illustrations and striking binding design in a finely produced 1999 second printing.
