Drew owns multiple Signet paperback copies. The copyright page identifies the edition as the first Signet printing of February 1988, with ISBN 0-451-16520-9. One copy retains several pages of handwritten notes summarizing the book’s rules for managing money.This was a book my Dad gave to my sisters and me when we were young to learn how to think about managing money. I remember reading it once in middle school, again in high school, and several times since.
I have multiple copies because I used to hand them out to neighborhood kids that were selling lemonade on the side of the street.
I’m less convinced of the message since 2020 and the new “going direct” policy that the Fed has chosen. As of this writing, the National Debt is north of 40 trillion dollars.
This book is more relevant to the old model, where savings was valued. Today, usury is built into the system, so the advice is less applicable.
I should honestly re-read the book.
I believe it was originally a pamphlet of sorts that banks used to hand out to customers as an engaging way to think about the power of compound interest and savings.
